Our Curriculum

Learners are at the heart of Curriculum for Excellence in Scotland and as part of this children from pre-school to the end of S3 are entitled to a Broad General Education. This means that your child will receive a rounded education and cover a wide range of knowledge, skills and experiences which will support them to grow up into successful, confident, effective and responsible adults. You can view information on the Scottish Curriculum at http://www.educationscotland.gov.uk/learningandteaching/thecurriculum/

The curriculum includes all of the experiences which are planned for children and young people through their education, wherever they are being educated. These experiences are grouped into four categories.

  • Ethos and life of the school
  • Curriculum areas and subjects
  • Opportunities for personal achievement
  • Interdisciplinary learning

Curriculum for Excellence is made up of building blocks for learning; these are called experiences and outcomes, or E’s and O’s. These E’s and O’s are levelled and learners progress through the levels as follows, however this is flexible:

Early Level

First Level

Second Level

Third Level

S1 onwards

At Port Charlotte we are developing a structured curriculum which ensures that all children are provided with learning opportunities that allow them to achieve their full potential within and beyond school, preparing them for the challenges of the 21st century.

We strive to deliver quality first learning and teaching, expecting all learners to be actively engaged in their own learning and development. Our curriculum allows for breadth and depth of learning, offering challenge and enjoyment. We offer choice and personalisation as well as ensuring learning is progressive.
